If nothing else, Andre Drummond??s season with the Connecticut Huskies proved that it does matter, even for a one-and-done player, where one chooses to play college basketball. Drummond??s decision to play at UConn seemed ideal when it was executed, albeit at such a late date the Huskies had to do all sorts of gymnastics to figure out how he could fit under the scholarship cap. Drummond was joining the defending NCAA champions, he would be coached by the man who had turned out such pros as Emeka Okafor, Ray Allen and Rip Hamilton and he would move directly into the starting lineup. Alas, it wasn??t so simple. Losing Kemba Walker took even more heart from the champs than anticipated. Coach Jim Calhoun was suspended three games and missed eight more because of back problems. And it was painfully obvious that veteran big man Alex Oriakhi did not embrace moving to power forward to accommodate Drummond. It also didn??t help that Drummond essentially wasted last summer playing travel-team ball instead of determining sooner that he would become a collegian in the fall of 2011. So it all went badly and more so when it was reported Thursday that Drummond was entering the '12 NBA Draft. He departs having averaged 10.0 points and 7.6 rebounds, so he wasn??t a completely lost cause, but the list of successful NBA big men who were average college players consists of ?? who, exactly? DeAndre Jordan? Sure, if we stretch the definition of ??successful?? to include someone currently averaging 7.6 points in the NBA. Mock drafts have Drummond going as high as No. 2 in the June 28 draft. It??s understandable that Drummond would want to leave a deteriorating situation at UConn that offers no hope of postseason play, especially given that a prominent draft position is being ??promised.?? But if Drummond becomes the NBA player he ought to be, it??ll be an upset. Such is true of some of his draft classmates, but not all: Smart moves Thomas Robinson, PF, Kansas. The NBA general manager who selects Drummond over Robinson, if such a thing occurs, will be mocked for years to come. Robinson has everything to become a tremendous NBA power forward. Jared Sullinger, PF, Ohio State. Although injuries caused his conditioning to decline during the season, smart scouts will remember his condition from October and November and the impact it had on his game. His sophomore year wasn??t flawless; he became impatient and, at times, petulant on the court. But his rebounding acumen will translate to the NBA, and his face-up game will make his post struggles against length less of an issue. Royce White, PF, Iowa State. His NBA position remains a bit of a mystery. Call him a ??player.?? He can play either forward position because of his strength and ball skills. He must improve as a shooter to get the kind of minutes his talent merits, though. John Jenkins, SG, Vanderbilt. He was as good a shooter as there was in college basketball ?? proving it again and again. If he says it??s time, it??s time. John Henson, PF, North Carolina. His offense is underrated by many analysts. His ability to hit mid-range jump-hooks with either hand was a revelation this season, and his defense continued to progress. He might struggle to find a starting role unless he's able to add bulk, but he??ll be a nice piece. Arnett Moultrie, PF, Mississippi State. Moultrie has been in college four years and showed in his one year with the Bulldogs that he had developed a
